Ordos Laboratory Introduction

    Ordos Laboratory Introduction

The Ordos Laboratory is a new type of research and development institution led by the Ordos City government, focusing on modern energy and coal chemical industries. The main focus is on the clean and efficient utilization of coal, green and low-carbon, modern coal chemical industry, new energy, and the digital and intelligent development of the energy industry. The laboratory aims to build a national major scientific innovation platform and become a leading center for technological innovation both domestically and internationally. On August 6, 2023, it was approved by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government as the Inner Mongolia Laboratory.

To build the Ordos Laboratory with a high starting point, high standards, and high quality, and to establish strategic technological strength in the coal chemical and new energy fields, the Ordos City government signed a strategic technological innovation cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University. By leveraging Tsinghua University’s resources in scientific research, talent, and technology, Ordos Laboratory is supported in team building, project setup, major technical breakthroughs, and technology transfer.

Ordos Laboratory focuses on building an industry-university-research cooperation platform around four main directions and one center, promoting the application of research results. The four directions include: New Coal Chemical Industry , marked by the industrial demonstration of a large-scale fluidized bed for coal-based syngas to aromatics, making it a new hallmark of Inner Mongolia’s modern coal chemical industry; Green Energy , focusing on renewable wind and solar energy and the synthesis of green aviation fuel from CO2, proposing a profitable new industrial process under the dual carbon goal; Industrial Heat Storage , aimed at resolving the contradiction between the intermittent nature of renewable energy and the continuous stability required by industrial processes, providing a new solution for green, low-cost long-term energy storage; Mass Production of New Materials , based on the regulation of the fluidized bed powder phase structure and enhanced transfer, achieving large-scale production of high-value-added carbon-based/silicon-based new materials. One Center , a high-end testing center serving the four directions, highlighted by high spatio-temporal resolution tunnel scanning electron microscopy.

The Ordos Laboratory operates with a flexible governance structure, implementing a corporate governance structure with the council as the core, operating under a director responsibility system led by the council. The laboratory’s funding mainly comes from the financial support of the Ordos City government, providing sufficient funds and space for construction, scientific research, and operational needs. The laboratory adheres to the concept of open collaboration, appointing leading talents from top domestic universities as the laboratory director. It adopts a "1+N" construction model, bringing together the advantages of domestic and foreign universities, research institutes, and industry-leading companies across institutions and regions, creating a collaborative innovation landscape with strong laboratory leadership and high-quality innovative resources.
